5-12-12 City Park 10am 5280 ft.

Held a birdwatching program for the library at city park. Went around both lakes and through the woods teaching people the basics of birding.

Notes

  • Cool to see 4 different swallow species. Mainly acted and fed in the same way. More barn swallow than any other.
  • Most water birds building nests. Black crown heron flew to tree right above us and gathered sticks.

Went with Jeff to the turkey trot loop. Very nice sunny day with cool temp.

  • Rock wren up by 2nd lookout point along trail. We took a break that must have been by its nest because it had grass in its beak and looked at us from a distance til we left.
  • Swifts then the swallows flew right by us on the switch back part of trail. Like fighter jets in a tight bank
Mt. Falcon 5-4-12 730pm

Tried a dusk hike looking for pygmy owls, but nothing doing in that category. However, did here a common poor-will for the first time.

Notes

  • Immediately after the sun went down the poor-will’s started calling. At first just heard one thinking it was something like an owl, but then 4-5 more chimed in. Couldn’t place the call till I realized half way down that it must be from the whip-poor-will family.
  • Hiked down hill in the dark with a full moon. Fun and a little scary.  Large bats flew over head right against the full moon.
Dino Ridge Hawkwatch 4-26-12 9am

Went up to the hawkwatch to see if anything was going on. 4 other guys were up there as well. Low number still, but did see multiple species

  • Got up too early because not much going on until an hour into my hike when birds seemed to appear.

  • Bluebird seen in forest which I’ve never seen. Escaping the heat?

South Platte River Trail 5280ft. 6pm-8pm 4-20-12

Traveled up cherry creek path to REI then down South Platte from REI to Alameda. Didn’t mean to bird, but saw a bunch. No BINOCS.

  • Very surprised to see American Dippers right next to REI. I found the nest located near the waterfall close to REI
  • Tons of mallards
  • Blck-crwn night herons feeding along south platte. One in slow moving water on rocks the other right next to a shallow run off area with fast water
  • None of the winter migrants I saw early in the year left.

Place close to DIA. abandoned farmland and the eastern edge of Rocky Mountain Aresenal

Prairie Dog

Notes

  • Set out to find burrowing owl. After scanning numerous prairie dog towns along the road I finally went to where a worker at RMNA told me there had been sightings. Sure enough I finally found one. Bird was peeking out of prairie dog hole looking right at me. Bird then came out and flew short flight. Very cool looking bird
  • Also added vesper sparrow to life list. Birds were always in front of me along fence.
Barr Lake State Park 4-19-12 8am 5280ft

Went to Barr Lake State Park early. Boasts to be a great migratory spot and has impressive species list…and its true. Lake in the middle of nowhere, much like an oasis. Cottonwood and marsh area around lake.

  • Added at least 3 birds(western grebe, yellow-headed blackbird, franklin’s gull) to my life list and got good views of birds I never really get to see. Awesome place to bird.
Lower Beaver Park 4-14-12 12pm 10,000ft

Hiked in a realativly “new” park. No sign on front, clearly old ranch land. Junk pits and old ranch stuff scattered all over. Aspen trees mixed with coniferous woods. Fairly windy day with overcast. Nice park to be utterly alone.

  • Everytime I see that bluebird it just stuns me. So blue and awesome on mountian.
